Michael Jackson Wins Eight Grammys

   1943 – Porgy and Bess opened on Broadway with Anne Brown and Todd Duncan in starring roles. The musical was based on an English-language opera by the American composer George Gershwin, which was adapted from of DuBose Heyward’s 1925 novel of the same name.

1984 – Singer Michael Jackson wins a record eight Grammy Awards. His album, “Thriller”, broke all sales records to-date, and has sold more 66 million copies worldwide. The mark was tied in 2000 by the group Santana.

1964 – Jazz Pianist Thelonius Monk appears on the cover of Time Magazine. Monk was featured in a piece called “The Loneliest Monk” by writer Barry Farrell which credited Monk with bringing jazz out of the swing era.
